    From April 2020 to June 2020 HWS undertook a focused piece of work to establish the overall picture of the GP services on offer in Sandwell in the early phases of Covid-19 and the patients experiences of the GP services.

    During the period July – September 2020 Healthwatch Sandwell has collated patient experiences. In addition, we have received service user experiences/feedback via our web-based ‘Feedback Centre’ and since its inception in July 2019 we have received over 220 experiences/comments shared across NHS and Social Care Services.

    HWS in partnership with SDCA have created a focus group for deaf and hard of hearing people to share their health and social care experiences in Sandwell. Please find attached our report following a focus group held on the 22nd of September 2020.

    The COVID-19 pandemic has affected every walk of life. HWS had spoken to many of adults (aged 18+) who have had their support services disrupted or paused during the pandemic.

    This report looks at the patient experience of using digital technology in primary care services in Sandwell. In 2019 Sandwell ranked as the 12th most deprived local authority area nationally for indices of multiple deprivations.

    A priority that was identified is mental health and well-being services. A survey conducted by HWS in February 2020 found that 60 % of respondents indicated that accessing and the quality of mental health and well-being services were a priority area for them.

    During the period January to March 2021, Healthwatch Sandwell has collated patient experiences. These are sourced from: phone contact with residents/patients, focus groups we facilitate, focus groups we attend, local online forums and service user groups. In addition, we have received service user experiences/feedback via our web-based ‘Feedback Centre’ and since its inception in July 2019 we have received over 274 experiences/comments shared across NHS and Social Care Services.

    Throughout the year a total of 9 Youth Healthwatch volunteers have been recruited and attending regular meetings.

    Sandwell CAMHS is a specialist mental health service commissioned to provide interventions to those children, young people and their families.

    The Healthwatch Sandwell report “The hidden impact of Covid-19 on carers” reflects the experiences of being a carer in Sandwell during the Covid-19 pandemic and highlights the hidden impacts on carers health and wellbeing 18 months on from the outbreak of the pandemic.

    Oakham Surgery is within the Health Partnership is a GP led partnership that comprises Regis Medical Centre, Carters Green Medical Centre and Whiteheath Medical Centre.

    We heard from a person who was concerned as their consultant had requested a referral from the GP for further treatment and this had not been actioned by the GP.

    Waterside is a care home for 59 people providing nursing, convalescence, palliative and respite care.

    A number of patients had contacted Healthwatch Sandwell during the COVID-19 pandemic as they have been unable to register with a National Health dentist. Dentists were not taking on new patients and were not offering routine checks (due to COVID-19 restrictions). However, some patients were able to access a dentist for emergency treatment.

    We received 59 survey responses, 27 participants took part in focus groups, and we conducted semi-structured interviews. Participants in the focus group were able to complete the survey as well if they chose to. Survey respondents were asked a series of demographic questions but were free to choose not to answer those questions.

    Hawthorns Medical Centre is situated in Smethwick area of Sandwell. It provides care for 3,500 patients with the support of the HUB that was initiated by the Sandwell and West Birmingham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). The HUB links them with Lodge Road Surgery and Victoria Health Centre, both in Smethwick.

    Residents of Sandwell regularly express frustrations with obtaining G.P. Surgery appointments and there are not enough G.P. appointments available to meet daily demand.

    HWS engaged with Sandwell residents who were ‘patients in waiting’ for hospital treatment to hear about their experiences and any impacts of Covid-19 on their hospital treatment pathways.

    Charnat Care is a day service for people with learning disabilities and or autism. The service is accessed by people from Sandwell and Dudley. The service is open Monday to Friday from 9.00am until 5.00pm

    Horseley Heath Medical Centre is situated in Tipton area of Sandwell. They also have another surgery, Tandon Medical Centre in Upper Gornal. They see 11,400 patients across the two practices.

    The Black Country Family Practice is situated in Tipton area of Sandwell. It provides care for 14,000 patients.

    This pharmacy operate ‘Pharmacy First’ which means the team can give clinical and practical medical advice or over-the-counter medicines to help safely manage minor health issues such as: sore throats, coughs, colds, tummy troubles, teething problems and aches and pains.

    At first glance this case study and description of events sound relatively straight forward that
    is, a person with a progressive degenerative neurological disease > receives support at home >
    receives care in hospital > moves to a respite at care home > moves to a more suitable care
    home, however, this person’s experience has highlighted many obstacles within the process
    and has been fraught with difficulties.
